One Poker Hen 164-165

Last week I said things couldn't get any better than a double release, but I was wrong! Two double releases in a row! Enjoy Kaiji in double-vision!

Thanks to Sonickrazy for the translations and to Crump Biggums for the cleans!

One Poker Hen 164
One Poker Hen 165
"The hell d'ya mean naive!?"

Kaiji strips Kazuya bare for the world to see. He simply lays it all out for him on a platter. What I really like about the exchanges here are a couple things. Kaiji is dealing damage to Kazuya which is pretty effective. Kazuya always talked about being able to see what truly lies beyond a person's heart, but when you don't have the life experience to back up certain things, you simply can't talk. Kazuya is bound and gagged. He can't say anything about this. It's a fact that if you haven't experienced the life-or-death struggle that Kaiji, Mario and Chang have gone through, you really can't get into their shoes on certain points. You can only guess.

The other thing I like about this, is the fact that Kaiji is not only talking to Kazuya about what happened in the last round, but also at Chang and Mario. He tells Kazuya about how he could feel their agitation when he picked his DOWN card. I think he's killing two birds with one stone here. Telling Kazuya where he fucked up and also letting Mario and Chang know that they messed up as well. Kazuya Mario and Chang were all caught off guard by Kaiji's actions. Kaiji could simply turn and talk to them about the problems, but that would be like setting off a signal flare to Kazuya about what to look out for and possible future developments that might come into play. Pretty tricky Kaiji.

"You've got no idea how much more there is!"

Kaiji really hits it home here talking about true friendship. Kazuya has always been a big purveyor that true friendship doesn't exist. It's what keeps him sane, since no matter how he tried and what he did, he simply could not gain it. But here comes Kaiji, demonstrating it right in front of his eyes. That would be one thing, but to come out and say it so bluntly is really like taking a brick to the face. Kazuya can't understand it. It's beyond him. Something that shouldn't exist is being proven right before his eyes, when he set out to prove Kaiji wrong from the start.

I feel like Kazuya has taken some significant damage here. It's the kind of damage that can seep into someone's soul and poison them. Kazuya's mind is a mess right now. This is what Kaiji was aiming for. He will be sure to capitalize on it.

  1. I feel like these past 4 chapters have really moved the characters forward in many ways and I love it. Thank you so much for the double release again! I really couldn't be more thrilled about that.

I find it funny that here in the comments we mentioned the fact that the expressions could be very relevant to the game. I am happy that we left it generally untouched until these past few chapters and that it came into play this way.

Finally, I could imagine Kazuya becoming Kaiji's Vegeta somehow, and I feel like the "final showdown" with Teiai and Hyodo Kazutaka could go to very interesting places. Here's hoping Kaiji goes on for many years!

(Which reminds me... could anybody tell me what's the best way to support this mango?)

  7. Thank you for another double release, we truly don't deserve you guys!

I love seeing Kaiji use his gambling experience and sense of friendship against Kazuya, it's very much annoying him to lose to someone who has better experience in these fields than him. I can't wait to see how much this ends up affecting him in the future rounds.

  8. I'm REALLY loving this arc. I didn't think it was that exciting at first, but we're really getting into the meat of it, now.

  9. Haha! I saw chapter 164 in a JAV!

It's BLK-220. 2 pages are shown. The actress wasn't really reading it, just laughing weirdly. But the director, I suppose, must be a fan of Kaiji.

  11. Just want to say a massive cheers for two double uploads in a row, it's amazing how much more entertaining the manga is by reading even one more chapter a week rather than one.

    Keep up the great work!

  12. The credits page Tambur made last release would fit here too, hehe. Said this, oh my god. Kaiji is using EVERYTHING to humiliate Kazuya. He's opening the game and saying what he knows to give knowledge to Kazuya. I don't know if it as planned move, but man, Kazuya is devasted emotionally, filled with regret and envy from having no friends, angry for not calling and doubting himself the suspicious man himself, also more angry for losing to Kaiji and hearing 4 chapters of "YOU LOST HAHA", it's almost as he lost 6 of his lives. If Kazuyas drowns himself in these emotions sure he will lose next bet even if he got an UP Card.
Kaiji is gonna get a 7! I bet that.

Thank you guys for the awesome double release! Thank you! I read your work now for more than 2 years i guess :)

  13. I hope that I'm not the only one who hates Kazuya? I am not sure why, but despite what he's done in the past, I do sympathize with him. He grew up only knowing fake people, and when he actually thought that he might have had friends for once, they basically sold him out quickly (in his mind) when they threatened him.

Seeing Kaiji with friends really is hurting him mentally. Maybe I'm wrong (since I haven't seen the raws), but maybe it's possible for Kazuya and Kaiji to ultimately be friends later on? Teaming up against the evil old guy.

    1. While that is all well and good, please remember the graveyard Kazuya showed Kaiji at the beginning of Kazuya-Hen. Kazuya is a flawed character for sure who has lived his life with a few misfortunes that have taken their toll on him, but what he does to relieve the stress from that is the main problem. Sure there are times when you may feel the need to pity him, but never forget who he really is.

  14. Whenever Kaiji talks about friendship it turns out bad for him. I hope it isn't the case now.

And what with akagi's attitude with all the hmm-hmm-hmm? lol
