One Poker Hen 148

To Deuce or not to Deuce, that is the question. A question that is SURE to be answered this chapter!

Thanks to Sonickrazy for the translations and to Crump Biggums for the cleans!

 "Am I completely sure?"

If he messes up, that means death! Kaiji agonizes over his decision to play either the 2 or the King. All things considered, they are really laying the suspense on thick. I kinda like that. You can't take a life and death decision easily.

Kaiji reconsiders his position on playing to 2. Surely the risks are too great to play a 2. Sticking with a King is much better. He has no concrete proof that Kazuya has an Ace. Only that Takazaki left after a bit of back and forth with Kazuya. I don't think this is valid proof either. Too many things that could be going into that decision. Especially since this isn't the first time Kazuya has played this game. The goons have left Kazuya alone supposedly many times before, what's so different now?

Kazuya seems pretty miffed by Chang's interference. Had Chang not interfered, Kaiji would surely have played the 2. I guess we will see just what the outcome of this is

  1. So, recent news is that they decided to suddenly conclude Akagi after ages of stalling. Seeing as this manga is doing the same, is it at risk of facing a similar mercy kill?

    1. Akagi and Kaiji are published out of two different magazines. On top of that, Kindai Mahjong is being pretty stupid with its business if the post from two Akagi chapters ago was anything to go off of, so worrying that Kaiji is on the chopping block because of a different magazine company's decisions is a bit silly.

Also, I believe the current translations on Kaiji are a good deal behind on the current chapters and is probably reaching towards the climax of One Poker.

    2. Furthermore, the magazine that Kaiji is in is wildly popular, infinitely moreso than Kindai Mahjong. It's the same magazine as Prison School and GTO among others.

  2. After Akagi is either caught up with or finished, will you be picking up Shin Kurosawa again or maybe doing double Kaiji chapters (at least for a while) since the most recent version looks like its almost 100 chapters ahead.

  3. The more I look back, the more I think Kazuya has an Ace... Pocket Aces twice in 13 hands. That would be miraculous, outrageous! The game would have to be rigged one way or another. I think this is the case with Mother Sophie.

Even if One Poker is fair, she still is a demon. It's an Ace.

    1. Kazuya can't be playing fair. He opened the game with pocket aces, and he's going to "end" the game with pocket aces. I think he's somehow manipulating the machine so that he can swap out any Up card he gets with an Ace when he can't be seen by the others. The sign to the goon was probably Kazuya doing that in full view of him, without Kaiji being aware of it.

It has to work this way because Kaiji always wins by figuring out the "trick" to the game, and finding out how to turn it to his advantage. The only game in which he tried to cheat INSTEAD of watching his opponent was the Tissue Box raffle, and that ended disastrously.

  4. It occurs to me that Kazuya very likely practiced the timing on those safety nets and IF Kaiji wins in the end, the former will take the fall and survive.

  5. This is the chapter where Kaiji "clicks". It happens in every arc when he realizes the devastating consequences of losing. He's at his peak here. Still not sure if he will choose the King

    1. He has to, and he's going to lose to an Ace. He's going to come face-to-face with his own death.

And then he's going to get one or two Red Lives. I'm not sure about Marco, but Chang is absolutely going to put his life on the line for Kaiji's - especially since he's going to blame himself for the whole mess.

    2. That will probably happen eventually, but i do think that Kazuya has a King too.
