 "You can't do this Kaiji-san!"

What a nice set of pearlies Kaiji has. It's been a long while since we've seen him smile this much. Last time I can remember was when I was pandering to Kazuya to not press the kill switch in the savior game. Kaiji smiles are very few and far between I have noticed. It makes sense when you consider how hard he's fighting most of the time.

When you think about how long Kaiji would have to work to even get close to 100 million yen, it feels so mind boggling. He literally planned out his whole life in a couple pages. For a young Japanese guy with no special sets of skills, you're pretty much doomed to the hell that is part time jobs. You could certainly try and break into full time, but usually that doesn't happen, because once someone gets to full time, benefits kick in and the business starts to lose money. So he'd be limited to shitty part time jobs that just get increasingly worse as he gets older. Younger guys are seen as more youthful and are fine being around public. As you get older and more rugged they try to keep you away from view, so eventually it's walled in jobs doing digging. Sounds a lot like being in the underground hell!

I'm slightly unsettled by how happy Kaiji seems right now talking about how he will die. It seems very odd. Maybe he's just happy to have another chance at winning the money. Or maybe he's learned that his life wouldn't be worth much even if he does win. Maybe it'd be better to die than to return to the daily struggle of life. Maybe winning everything or going broke and dying is the only options he thinks he has. Please reconsider Kaiji! Your life holds limitless bounty! If only you could reach out your hand and grasp it!

  2. Man, I love this series when it gets into those dark areas of "gambling is all I have" kind of stuff.
I'm from a third world country where it's not far fetched to sometimes feel like that kind of shitty dead-end overworked jobs are your only options. However there's always options we don't normally consider.

  3. Kaiji is going full Akagi here with all that smiling and all that talking about his own life so lightly

  4. Kaiji took a nice and different turn here. We know he likes gambling, but this is the first time we've really seen him smile and be ok with the fact he might die gambling. Really good chapter, feels fresh after seeing him do the same panicked expression for 40ish chapters.

  5. >"I'll tell you!"
    >Doesn't
    God damn it Fukumoto

Besides that, great chapter, shines some more info on Kaiji's psyche. If he was all that fearful he wouldn't be here in the first place - 400 million is already more than enough to live on, after all. He's here to beat the other jackass, hope this time it works out better than Tissue Box Raffle did.

    Thanks for the chapter

  8. At this very moment Kaiji is worth more than he will ever be if he called it quits. It's kind of an interesting way of looking at it.
