One Poker Hen 121

After a bit of last-minute scrambling, we present to you chapter 121 of Kaiji!! Apologies for the delay, but it couldn't be helped as Tambur had a medical emergency this Tuesday and could not typeset the chapter on time, which is also why we did not have a Kurosawa chapter this week. Luckily for us, Kazuhiko the all-star typesetter who typesets for happyscans and Hokuto no Gun was willing to take time out of his busy schedule to fill in for him this chapter! I can't give you anything certain for our release schedule at this point but Tambur assures me that his condition is not critical and he will be able to typeset some more in a week or two.

Thanks so much to Kazuhiko for filling in for typesetting this time, and to Crump for continuing to provide us with cleans!

"It's not giving up, it's cutting my losses!!"

So apart from being typeset by someone different, another big change this chapter was that we got rid of the Poker Notes since I don't believe there will be any more new ones from this point on, and I don't really think they were that needed in the first place, so I figure it's better to save time and bit size by getting rid of them. I don't think anyone will mind, but if anyone does feel free to let me know in the comments.

As for the chapter, while no actions in the game are made we see that this is a difficult decision for Kaiji and we go through the options he's considering as he realizes new information. I honestly think it was pretty strange for Kaiji to even stay in his initial "I'd better fold my 6" state for so long considering that Kazuya's card was definitely a DOWN card, but at least he eventually realizes that information. But what everything culminates to in this chapter is that Kazuya has to have a 6 or 7 since he played a 6 in a must-lose scenario last hand, and he'd never play the better of his two cards in a spot like that. So the obvious decision here is to fold, and hopefully Kaiji won't talk himself out of it next chapter.

So while I have the microphone here in Tambur's absence I'd just like to give my thoughts on this arc in general. I feel like One Poker is kind of a bad game if you were to play it in real life, especially the whole thing where if someone calls you can still put in a raise afterwards; it makes it way way too hard to call anything to the point where if your opponent raises you you pretty much have to fold or raise back; calling will almost certainly result in them raising again. But I feel like this game really works for Kaiji as a series since there's really never any telling for sure what anyone has unless Fukumoto tells us. Any hand can be a place for a bluff, and any hand can be the place for a huge win or loss. When I was reading this in Japanese the first time I found myself really having no idea what was going to happen next, and as the players make their decisions as to whether to call raise or fold it invites you to do the same, to work out for yourself what the right move is. It feels very different from the absurdity of the previous arcs with all their cheating to me, and it always leaves me second guessing my predictions. Without giving away too much, let me just say that you guys are in for quite the ride.

  1. Thanks for the release, despite the difficulties.

Kaiji should spend more of his thinking time purely on trying to win, i.e. trying to figure out what Kazuya's card is. He's actually being pessimistic and wrong about overvaluing the 1 life. He's actually undervaluing it by being so eager to fold and give up on a possible opportunity for success.

  3. I'd love to see Kaiji folding and Kayuza flipping over something else than 7 so much, just for pure ownage and momentum change. But that's probably won't happen :(

    1. I wouldn't rule this out, though! The possibility exists! And it would be an impressive play by Kazuya.

    2. Yes, I really want to see this happen.

Since last time Kaiji had to choose between a Queen and a King, and many comments mentioned how the King would trick Kazuya into thinking that the other card is an Ace, I wouldn't be surprised if Fukumoto himself had the same thought and decided to use the same trick for Kazuya.
It does make more sense in this current situation after all.

  4. My guess is Kazuya is bluffing. He's got a low card. Kaiji made him fold with a down card earlier so this would be a good comeuppance.

    5. People are so hungry for a new chapter, they seem to be Google translating it themselves.

    6. Yea, I'm sure he tried to give an summary for the next chapter. Maby Kaiji has gone sick with broke cat. The cat is Mario as he picked up the cat power-up from 3D world and we already know Mario is broke. Kazuya removed Kaijis win streak easily with a 7 card. It all makes sense can't wait for the next chapter now.

    1. No, this is comedy at this point. The clear implication above is that Tambur is safe, just in no state to do the work. The worst you could possibly expect is the group disbanding, but nobody's gonna die. Relax.
