One Poker-Hen 115

Kazuya is backed up against a wall! Or rather, a large hole... Kaiji raises!

Thanks to Sonickrazy for the translations and to Crump for the cleans.

One Poker-Hen 115

"This is the part of poker, where things can really get crazy!"

Crazy stuff! Kaiji steals a life from Kazuya at the measily price of a shitty DOWN card! The Kaiji combo continues to 4! Kazuya was right to be suspicious of the raise. In Poker, raises can mean strength and weakness at the same time. It's pretty hard to determine whether someone is raising with a paper tiger or has concealed a set of fangs, lying in wait. The same can be said for checking as well. Checking can be offensive given certain circumstances.

There was something I wanted to talk about in this chapter that differs a bit when it comes to usual poker. The Raising System to be precise. In normal poker, how it works, is you will raise someone and that person has 3 options: To call, raise again, or fold. In the event a raise is called (matched) the hand is considered complete and it moves forward past the betting phase to its next phase. In One Poker, this is different. Normally, the player who got called on a raise, MUST accept the call and move forward to the next phase. But in One Poker, the opponent has the option to RAISE again as a response to the call. Normally, the only way to do this, would be to raise in response to a raise. But even this is limited in how many times you can re-raise someone. In One Poker, the only limit is how many lives you have. Truly, your max bet is going all-in. At this stage, if both players went all in, the match would instantly end.

As it stands now however, there is still one thing we are unsure about, and it is how this moving platform works and what is going to happen to Kazuya next chapter.

  1. Crazy stuff indeed! Kazuya really got intimidated Kaiji there! HE GOT STUCK IN THE QUICKSAND OF GAMBLING!

I was 100% expecting Kaiji to play his Queen here, but this way it's even more interesting. He is already getting super cocky though! I don't wanna know what happens, should he draw another UP-card next round...

  2. OH! So the cards are revealed anyway?

I've been playing this as a drinking game with some friends and we didn't reveal the cards when they were folded. Kept the guessing game more ambiguous but I guess I prefer this way, the later hands might become more interesting.

I came up with betting "caps" so it's small amounts of alcohol but you can still raise and drink the whole bet at the end of the hand. The loser drinks it and with every one of the 26 matches people get drunker and drunker. Pretty fun.

    However, don't take drinking lightly

    1. That surprised me too.

It would have been funny if they weren't shown, and if Kaiji's next card was an UP card, so that Kazuya could realize that Kaiji played his weaker card.

  3. I maintain my position, that hole is there just for looks.

    1. I'm guessing it's to allow a losing player a chance to get back into the game by betting his own life, which would explain why the hole wasn't explained, because it's otherwise not part of the game.

    2. This group is considerably behind schedule for this release compared to say Akagi, so readers of this scan will need to wait before a more definitive decision can be made regarding the hole.

    3. What i mean is that unless they get to the last part of the game no one will be falling down there at all, and chances are no one will be falling even when they get there, the hole is allegorical, like the second anon points.

Well Anon 3, they are working in 3 series at the same time, so they would have to put one on hold, not a big fan of Hero, but the current villain seems entertaining enough, and even if that's about all that one has going for it, if we are fair it deserves the chance of being covered (talking about fairness we should get more Tonegawa).

    4. 5 volumes of Hero out as of today, this group is just over halfway through the tankoubon releases. I don't care either way about Hero for various reasons, but for this series they are behind enough that anyone who can read Japanese will know roughly what is going on at present just from the wikipedia entry.

No more hints from me, but plenty of rabid fans for this series waiting for scans here so no need to spoil any surprises.

  4. I cannot read Japanese so cannot give any spoilers to the future volumes of Kaiji so this is just a thought and not a spoiler:

Am I the only one who gets the feeling that Kaiji is being very naive and Kazuya is losing on purpose. Remember past games such as E-card, Chinchiro and 17 Steps Mahjong, especially with the first two games. He was given a confidence boost to win and then he kept losing, realised the opposition was cheating and then Kaiji cheated to get his own back. Why do I get the feeling this is happening again? I can't see how it can happen at this stage but I feel Kaiji will get overconfident and Kazuya will cheat to bring Kaiji down a peg or two.
