One Poker-Hen 107

Here we are at Chapter 107. I swear it feels like an eternity since this arc started. Only been 10 chapters.

Thanks to Sonickrazy for the translations and to Crump Biggums for the cleans.

One Poker-Hen 107

"There is an ebb and flow to luck!"

And so it begins! I was getting a little anxious when he started talking about the past and how luck works, but we made some good progress! Kaiji and Kazuya have their first cards and they have already been inserted into the card reader. Next chapter we shall hopefully find out whether their cards are UP or DOWN and how many of each.

While I was doing this chapter and slowly reading what Kaiji was saying about how he acquired this money, it hit me that Kazuya was mainly the reason Kaiji won. Without him, Kaiji couldn't have gotten the loans necessary to go toe to toe with Muraoka. I already knew this of course, but it hit me in a weird way when I remembered it during this chapter. The entirety of this night has been by Kazuya's will. From the bets at the backroom casino, to the Salvation game, to One Poker. I'm not saying that he willed everything to go the way it did. But as Kaiji started talking about luck and flow, I started wondering about Kazuya.

As far as Kazuya is concerned, he has two goals to doing what he is doing. Number 1 is, to flesh out material to write his book. He is very proud of the prgress he has made in his book. Something that sets him apart from his father Hyoudou. He wants to break the chains of the family name that has been dragging him down. In his mind, the only way is to become an accomplished writer. For people to praise him for the work he has done, completely uninfluenced by the Hyoudou name.

Number 2 is, to prove that his beliefs in the human heart and friendship are easily broken. That you can truly trust nobody. One of the main problems eating away at Kazuya is what happened at the end of the Salvation game, with Kaiji saving Chang and Mario. People he had never met, buying their lives at a total price of 70 Million Yen ($700,000~). Knowing that Kaiji will need every penny he has to battle Kazuya, Kazuya is deeply confused and perplexed by this notion. That he would willingly harm his chances to such a degree for people that have virtually no impact on his life. Kazuya says he will break Kaiji and prove that that philosophy on life is utter trash.

My one question is: How will Kazuya disprove Kaiji's views on friendship and loyalty in One Poker?  If he is even aiming for this at all. I guess we shall find out in the coming chapters.

  2. Kaiji will inevitably bet Mario and Chang's lives in this gamble. That'll be the real test for him and gold for Kazuya's information on his book. The real question is, how will Mario and Chang react to having their lives at collateral just after escaping with them?

    1. No way man. They are betting the human life of a man who works his entire life as a salaryman. Chang and Mario's lives are worthless in comparison to those people. They are worth maybe 10-20 million each. Also there's no way Kaiji would agree to bet their lives, at least without their consent. That's not the man he is.

  3. Last week:

SITTING: an action so EPIC that clearly needs an ENTIRE CHAPTER of this series.

    This week:

CHOOSING who goes first: a decision of UNIVERSAL proportions that clearly needs another ENTIRE CHAPTER

    Coming next week:

REVEALING the cards: an action of INFINITE zawa that will clearly need another ENTIRE chapter

    Thank you for the chapter!

  4. I can't believe people are complaining about how slow this is going?

WHERE WERE YOU DURING THE SALVATION GAME!

This is so much better and faster and more interesting than that!

    1. The pacing is just as slow as part 4. We're 11 chapters in now and they've only just dealt the cards.

  6. Complaining about pacing with Fukumoto is like complaining about the sun being too bright. Not a damn thing you can do about it and it's something that you already know to expect. Embrace it. It makes things much easier.

    2. The Thing is, a lot of us remember how Fukumoto used to be in the past, if his Manga were always this slow, yeah you'd have a point but nobody would be reading them then in the first place

  7. Thanks for a chapter!

I was scared for a second that we'll know both cards dealt to Kaiji in a single chapter.

I wonder if Fukumoto will manage to slow pacing down even more than in Salvation game.
