Akagi Chapters 202 & 203

At last, the final chapters of Volume 23! In these chapters, what will Washizu choose to do after making his unfathomable double riichi?! And if he doesn't have it dealt into... will Akagi be able to prevent a Tsumo?!?!

Thanks to Jatelion for the cleans, and to Kazuhiko for the typesetting. There will be a mahjong night this Saturday at 22:00 GMT (3:00 PM PDT).

Chapter 202
Chapter 203

Volume 23

"This is my era! As long as I still live!!"

Rather than trying to explain how awesome this chapter was, why don't I just show you through mangacaps. Hopefully I don't need to say any more about this chapter other than that I love it dearly.

Washizu's mind is once again rushed with Endorphins, Beta-Endorphins, Leucine, Isoleucine and all those other chemicals. And this time Akagi has no power to stop him.

Washizu's face on the right page expresses mine exactly.

"That obstacle has finally been sent rolling to the bottom of a ravine!!"

So yeah, Akagi also had a hand, so it was definitely the right move to have Suzuki deal in straight away. Some people might be wondering why Washizu is so happy about just winning more points when he already has so many, but you have to remember that this is also getting rid of Akagi's dealer turn, which could have gone on until Washizu died. With this, there is now a set time limit of 3 rounds on the game. Sure, Yasuoka might have a few Honba, but the point is that now Akagi only has 3 more chances to get a direct hit or tsumo. That's huge. Washizu's lost 1100 ccs to now, and if we presume that 1800 ccs is the point where he cannot survive past and that Washizu will be going full-on defense now, Akagi has to get 3 mangan tsumos in a row to drag Washizu down that low. He's practically going to need a direct hit or two in order to survive, and now that Washizu can just defend completely and let the rounds go by, that's not going to be easy.

Especially now that the South 2nd looks to be a blowout in Washizu's favor. He has an incredible 1-shan-ten in his starting hand, meaning it's possible he could get yet another double riichi. And even if not, it's a very fast hand. He can probably just do a closed tanyao hand without riichi and end the round just like that.

  1. Not the doki-doki "suspension bridge" I was expecting. But you can't win them all.

  4. I wasn't paying extreme attention to the state of everyone's hands, but I was kinda hoping for a headbump, is this even in the ruleset...?, by Akagi just to send Washizu deeper into despair.

    1. It's shown in the second chapter that Akagi was in 1-Shan-Ten, he couldn't have head-bumped. Yasuoka was probably even farther.

    2. I meant prior to that reveal, the revelation that Akagi wasn't in tenpai was unexpected.

  5. I beamed so much when Washizu sama made the right call. All those chemicals filled my brain too.

  6. It would be great if Yasuoka started getting honba here.

    1. If he doesn't, each of these games is gonna take FOREVER.

    2. Yasuoka can only ron off of Washizu to help Akagi. If he gets a tsumo both players will just go down an equal amount. And I don't see Yasuoka getting any hits on Washizu.

    1. I have a question here, for quite sometime i have noticed that there are these awesome looking pictures reminiscent of the illustrations that accompany the Divine Comedy, and paintings of artist such as Hieronymus Bosch, they normally appear in certain panels to make emphasis of various kinds, or in the covers of the volumes, however! at the end of chapter 203 i think i saw the very first isolated image of this kind (correction they appear quite often, but this seemed to be the first that is not from the Divine Comedy, or at least not from Hell, indeed that one is from purgatory, which makes you think...).

Ok i did some search and apparently these images start appearing after vol 10, but the rest of vol 10 hasn't been scanlated, and vol 13 doesn't has one of those, so it is possible that they don't appear in all the volumes? for example vol 18 has a worried Akagi instead of one of these illustrations. while others are really similar for example vol 11 and 19 have pretty much the same image, but with different size. Also is the change from hell to purgatory, a random change? or maybe a significant clue to an advancement in the story?

    2. they do go back and forth a bit between Inferno and Purgatory, so it's a bit of a stretch to draw a direct correlation between the illustrations and the progress of the story itself (volumes 25, 26 & 27 use images from Inferno, just to spoil you a little) and they don't go in any particular order, they seem to be chosen largely at random- volume 24 chose a very appropriate one though, I think, and you should see what I mean quite soon!
You're also right that they didn't start appearing at the end until volume 11, and one or two have missed them out (volume 14, interestingly, uses a biblical illustration by Doré instead). I collected the ones from 14-24 here if anyone else is interested (they could be better quality but I ripped most of them from the raws): http://nichijouzattou.tumblr.com/post/17520295774/art-at-the-back-of-akagi-volumes-14-24-except
It's one of my favourite personal touches in Akagi, and I'm glad someone else noticed it! It would've been lovely if Ten had used the illustrations for Paradise too, but oh well...

    3. Oh man thanks a lot, that is a great compilation you made there!

I see so there is no real connection between their order and the story, i was starting to think that i was onto something haha (since purgatory is quite weird too with all the things they souls have to do to clean themselves, and the occasional monster passing by).

Oh the hype, now i can't wait for volume 24.
This one right? http://www.danshort.com/bible/page1.php?p=101 how interesting while they all are from the same author i wonder why is that he made that change?

Yeah i also noticed that Kaiji has some similar touches but i am not sure if he uses them in the same explicit manner.

Oh the ones of Paradise with all the halos and the myriads of angels would have been crazy to have!
