Kazuya-Hen Chapters 43 & 44

Chapters 43 and 44 of Kazuya-Hen are now up! In these chapters, Kaiji and Kazuya argue! As a side note, Akagi 197 is going to be quite a while yet, Iapetus came down with pneumonia so he has not been able to clean. I think we'll have 4 chapters or something ready at once when we do get back on track, though.

Thanks to Crump for the cleans, and to Tambur for the typesetting! I will be teaching you how to play Hanafuda (and maybe Go as well) on stream this Friday at 20:00 GMT (12:00 PM PST), and there will be a Mahjong Night this Saturday at 23:00 GMT (3:00 PM PST).

Chapter 43
Chapter 44

"In the end, he did save us!"

So, Mitsuyama chases his buddies around the friendship-testing device as Kazuya makes fun of him. Then the Asian Three start to make up a bit, but the misunderstanding still remains. This is where the manga starts getting reeeeeealllllyyyy ssssllllooooowwww, as everyones' mindsets are explored super deep. It was already slow, but get ready for a lot of volumes spent on this one game. This manga didn't sell nearly as well as its prequels, and got pretty bad ratings too, just because there's so little content in each volume that it hardly makes it worth the money. I'm sure a lot of die-hard Fukumoto fans will enjoy it to the bitter end and never get fed up with it, but for me, this was the first time in Kaiji that I really felt like it was too drawn out. That's not to say that we'll be dropping the series or anything, but I'll be glad when we're through this arc.

As for the chapter itself, there was one moment that I read the raws of and was like "How the HELL am I going to translate this into English?" but when I actually sat down to translate it I didn't have much trouble. This was the moment on the bottom of page 058 where Mario mouths "Don Mai" to Mitsuyama. It's gratuitous English for "Don't Mind", or "Don't let it bother you", and I was super worried I was going to have to just leave it as Donmai and explain it in the margins, but it occurred to me while translating that "don't worry" pretty much fits the mouth movements well enough, AND fits the meaning perfectly. It still makes the thing on 059 where Mitsuyama works out the meaning kind of silly since the step between "don't worry" and "it's okay" doesn't really change anything, but ehh, I feel like it works.

"There's a fantastic reason for Mitsuyama to leave the other two in the dust!"

Mmmm, yeah, Kazuya, feed Kaiji that cheese. Shove it down his throat, ooooh, yeah. Give him some of that Salami, too. MMMMMM.

But aside from Kazuya ordering some food, nothing much happened this chapter. We've clarified that Mitsuyama might betray even if it wouldn't clear his debt, that's about it. Hooray.

  2. Seems like it would be hard for the people in Kaiji to drink wine, considering their noses will always get wet.

  3. I agree that the Series just gets slower and slower. Which is a shame, because while the premise of the Game is interesting, there is no real progress on the Overall plot. Even if you look at it as a Gamble of Lifeviews it won't hold up because its obvious that neither Kaiji or Kazuya will accept that they are wrong.

From a Storytelling perspective, there is no justification for wasting tons of chapters on this Game.

With that said, i really appreciate all your work, and if Kazuya-hen really got such Bad Ratings i hope Fukumoto will take it into consideration and brings the Manga back to its former Glory

  6. Yo,
I'm watching Fma 2003 first 25 five episodes followed by brotherhood and I'm starting to like the charachter of kimblee (in brotherhood) .
What do you think of him ?
Even if he's not a real genius, and he is a little psycho he give me a bit of an akagi feelling.
Maybe Akagi would have found him a worthy opponent.
