Kazuya-Hen Chapter 45

Just a single chapter this time. In this chapter, Kazuya and Kaiji argue some more! Thanks to Tambur for the typesetting and cleaning, and to Biggums for the redraws!

I'll be streaming Hanafuda for real this week on Friday. I'll be changing the time due to daylight savings, so it'll be at 1:00 PM PDT, which is still 20:00 GMT. There will be a mahjong night this Saturday at 3:00 PM PDT, which is now 22:00 GMT. I know they're not the same adjustments, but I decided that moving the stream later works better for me, and keeping the mahjong night earlier probably works better for our Europeans. Sorry if this causes any confusion!

"This is just one of the wild delusions that my messed-up mind spits out."

Cool, all that happened this chapter was that Chang and Mario came out of the interview rooms without understanding Mitsuyama's chair's malfunction, and Kazuya looked like a badass for predicting it. I liked making Kazuya's dialogue especially playful this chapter. He actually does call Mitsuyama "Mitsu-chan" at one point, I didn't just add that. That's all I have to say.

Oh, I guess I could add that Tambur got REALLY MAD at this chapter for all the oddly shaped bubbles that work well for Japanese's top-to-bottom, right-to-left style, but not for English's left-to-right, top-to-bottom style. But if I added that, it would mean that I really had no idea what to talk about this blog post, right? Yes it would.

  1. Yeah typesetting can be pretty frustrating, especially for a series like this where Fukumoto loves to use long, vertical bubbles and wiggly bubbles. "Gives 'em that impression!" was especially cruel. I feel like I could write an essay on all the different problems typesetting has with Fukumoto's manga.

But more importantly, it seems that Kazuya's game idea and thesis behind it is becoming more clear. If the players were robots, then it wouldn't be much of a problem. But the fact they're humans and super-close friends at that makes it all the more difficult. I can only imagine what would happen if Kaiji were in the seat with two others instead.

  2. "Well, the concept is a bit complicated, so let me use a few pages to say the same thing i said last chapter just with more words"

    Goddamit, Fukumoto

So Mario and Cheng haven't figured it out, but atleast the Worst Case scenario has been avoided. All Mitsuyama has to do now is not act like an Idiot, he could explain what happened to him via Sign Language for example.

    1. Pretty sure Kazuya wouldn't allow Sign Language, assuming the three even knew sign language and seeing how two of the three are foreigners who learned Japanese as a second language this is pretty unlikely. Even if Mitsuyama was able to communicate what happened the damage has been done. The fact that Chang and Mario both had to reassure Mitsuyama just highlights the fact that one of them might actually betray the group for the money. By no means has the worst case scenario been avoided. Kazuya got what he wanted, he was able to plant seeds of distrust in the minds of the players and this distrust will only grow as the game continues on. Best case scenario at this point would be Mario ending the game early since he's seen first hand what money can do to people. Unfortunately I have the sinking feeling that Mario will be the one to betray his friends as a sort of ironic twist.

    2. Previous FKMT approach: "Well, the concept is a bit complicated, so let me use so many metaphors that it will be like a swarm of bees. And let me fill this statement over as many chapters as the bible."

      Look. He's improving.

    3. By "Sign Language" i mean that Matsuyama merely need to make the gesture of trying to unfasten his Seatbelt and hitting the Button. What happens to him isn't extremly complicated to explain without Words.

Kazuya had no problems with letting them interact with each other beforehands. Hell, Mitsuyama tried explained what happend to him(altough very badly) and Kazuya had done absolutely nothing to stop that attempt.

Worst Case scenario would have been Mario and Cheng completly distrusting him. That isn't the Case yet, so Mitsuyama still has the Chance to clear the misunderstanding
