Akagi Chapter 196

Inb4 the inevitable "why are you releasing Akagi, I want more Kaiji, it's gotten so goooood" comments. I'm aware that we've just hit the midpoint of the Kazuya-Hen series, and we will definitely be releasing more chapters very soon, but I'm not going to be stopping Akagi this time, unlike what we did for DKaiji when it got to its midpoint. Partially because we have so many cleaners right now and it'd be a shame just to not take advantage of their cleans, and also because Akagi is about to get really good really fast.

That said, thanks to Tambur for the ridiculous typesetting, and to TA for the crazy cleans. I will be streaming more of Akko de Pon! Ikasama Hourouki next Friday at 20:00 GMT (12:00 PM PST), and we will be having a mahjong night tomorrow at 23:00 GMT (3:00 PM PST).

"Preposterous! Riichi?! You're calling Riichi?!"

So, Washizu is in a pickle. Akagi has just declared Riichi, and he is a ways behind him. He quickly figures out that the only reason Akagi could be declaring Riichi at this stage is because Yasuoka has his winning tile, so he can have it played as an escape procedure. But because he is able to play safe tiles all the way to Tenpai, he is forced into a situation where he must attack or else be killed through Tsumo. He can fold or take something of an unlikely Tenpai, but his main two options are to discard the 9-Pin or the 3-Sou, both of which will give him a 7-Sou closed wait. But both of these options look to be what Akagi is waiting on! What's a Washizu to do?

I don't want to say too much about this decision because most of what I could say about it is covered next chapter, but I will point out that the reason Washizu doesn't consider a 3-4-4-4 Sou 3-sided wait for 2-3-5 sou is because Suzuki has already played the 5-sou, so there's only one way for Akagi to be waiting on Washizu's 3-sou. Stay tuned for the next chapter and see what Washizu decides!

  2. I love Kaiji, but this chapter of Akagi was way better than any Kazuya-hen chapter so far. A real chapter for a mahjong player. Only ~20 pages but takes ages to read trying to figure the best options. Thanks for the releases!

  3. Where did the donate button go? I can't be bothered to post supportive comments but I want to give money

  4. btw, if they just want to take away Akagi's dealer, wouldn't it be much safer to have Suzuki be the one to rush to get a hand? then Washizu doesn't need to risk a direct hit, he can just fold and deal into Suzuki when Suzuki is ready. And it doesn't matter if Suzuki deals into Akagi anyway.

    1. That is a good point and we know from Washizu when he plays by calling on tiles he can make insanely fast hands

  5. Is it possible for Akagi to be waiting for the 9 man or the 3 soul? He has four opaque tiles is there a possible hand that would make it so that both the 3 soul and the 9 pin are his winning tile?

    1. No, a hand like that would be a 3s,9p dual pon/pair wait, which is not possible based on Akagi's hand. The other possibility is an irregular wait with a shape like this:

      3m-3m-3m-6p-6p-6p-7p-8p-3s-3s-4s-4s-4s (a wait for 6p-9p,3s)

This is impossible since there cannot be two opaque 3s. Hope that helped and enjoy Akagi!

    You asked for it :D

  7. My money's on 6-7-8-9p wait, because Washizu is most definitely going to deal in and the 9p wait is the only one out of the bunch that wouldn't result in Washizu being dead or very near dead.

    1. If Washizu deals the 3 sou he will be close to death?

  8. I love Kaiji, but lets face it. Akagi is a pure joy to read. Only One piece beats it

  9. Akagi is waiting on the 3 sou. He has to be. Washizu's theory on him waiting for the 9 pin assumes that he doesn't have the opaque 6 pin. But we saw his hand and he has the opaque and we can see his discards he still has it.

Akagi's wait is definitely for the 3 sou. But where is the intrinsic trap that will lead Washizu to not see that as the truth
