Akagi Chapter 187

The next chapter of Akagi is now up! Will Washizu draw his Tenpai?! Will he grab hold onto the ladder of freedom?!?! Well, that's what we're about to find out! Thanks as always go to Kazuhiko for the fantastic typesetting, and this week an extra thanks goes to TA for not only cleaning the chapter but also for painting a fantastic piece of artwork for our credits page! The original can be found at the end of this post, or you can see it on her tumblr here.

And of course, because I'm a shameless self-promoting fiend, I must remind you once again that I am streaming the Ten PS2 game this Friday at 20:00 GMT (12:00 PM PST). I also must remind you that Mahjong Day will be this saturday at 23:00 GMT (3:00 PM PST) on the irc.

"What the hell are you doing, you stupid helicopter?!"

So, we rejoin Washizu as he takes the next 3 tiles to complete his starting hand, and... They're useless. Washizu's hand did not, in fact, reach Tenpai. But that's to be expected, having a starting hand in Tenpai is a pretty rare event, even for someone like Washizu, and especially with the lack of momentum he has. It's actually more surprising that he's able to keep up with Akagi after dealing into so many hands to now; that he was ever ahead of Akagi in this round is something to behold. But nonetheless, his hand stops at 1-Shan-Ten, one tile from Tenpai, causing him to curse his fate as his draws get worse and worse. And now, Akagi has caught up to him... he, too, is in 1-Shan-Ten!

But the main attraction of this chapter has to be the stunning credits page, painted by TA and typeset by Kazuhiko. I'm just flabbergasted at the detail of this painting, we have a true artist on our hands, here. You can find the actual credits page in the chapter, so I'll put the original work here for your viewing pleasure. Thanks again, TA!

  2. Love love LOVE how fast these updates are happening.
    Love it
But you do know it is a race. Who will reach the end first? You guys or Akagi Season 2 not even announced yet? Now is the time to grab the lead before someone starts existing and kicks some ass.

  3. Honestly, I don't think Akagi or Kaiji will get a second and third season respectively. As much as I want it to happen, it just wouldn't appeal as much to the masses as Kaiji in season 1 and 2 did, or with Akagi.

  4. Speaking of new things. You guys should totally do the new Kurosawa manga. Since it seems apparent Hox has no interest in doing it at this time unfortunately.

  5. What? no way, people like Kaiji too much for it to be dropped by Madhouse. 3rd season will come for sure , maybe sometime in 2015

  6. I wouldn't be surprised if they did Zero, it has no mahjong.

  7. Kaiji will get a third season it just won't get a dub. And the Akagi Season 2 could be announced literally one second after I post this comment and I wouldn't be surprised.

  9. It was mentioned years back that everyone involved had interest in doing a second season of Akagi, and that it had been successful enough to get one. It seemed they were kind of implying they'd do it once the Washizu arc finished. But it's been a while since then, and things change, and the Washizu arc has gone on even longer, so who knows if they feel the same now.

  10. Is Kaiji having mahjong really a problem for the Japanese audience? I know a lot of western fans would be put off by it, some would probably not watch it at all, but would it really cut the main audience?

Besides, it isn't really mahjong, it's just a very easy to understand two player game.

  11. Awesome work as usual guys! I love Washizu's constant muttering of "What the hell?" It's like me when I'm playing mahjong.

Also, I looove the new credits picture, it works so well for these last rounds!
