Akagi Chapter 168

At last, a new chapter of Akagi presents itself! In this chapter, Washizu nearly draws his winning tile! He is very close to it... but could drawing a tile close to the Haku be worse than drawing something unrelated...?!

Thanks to Doc for his quality cleans, and to Kazuhiko for his typesetting, despite various interruptions over the past few days. Mahjong Day is back on again for this week; it will be Saturday at 22:00 GMT.

In related news, I have bought Volume 4 and 5 of HERO, as per the request of the voters on the poll. I am currently scanning them and making them look nice and snazzy, and I'll put them up on rawscans when I'm done, which I expect I will be in about a week.

In unrelated news, yeah, there's ads on the sidebar now. I've tried to make them as unobtrusive as possible by putting exactly one ad in a place where there's already a lot of activity with the donations button and stuff. Hopefully it serves its purpose.

"If Washizu draws his winning tile . . . I'll die! However. . . If he doesn't get it, then he'll be ensnared!"

Wow, what a chapter. Akagi fully admits that he will die if Washizu draws his winning tile, no ifs ands or buts. However, if he doesn't, he will have a major decision on his hands. Even though Washizu is well aware that he has all the flow there is to have right now, and that Akagi's hand is almost certainly a Bluff, if he deals in, it will be a Kokushi Musou. A yakuman. Enough to drain his remaining funds in one fell swoop. And what do you know, Washizu has exactly that decision to make; he draws the Xia, a tile that Akagi's Illusionary Kokushi Musou could be waiting on. And what's more, it's the transparent Xia. If it were the Opaque Xia, he could simply turn the Xia into his pair and deal the Ton, since Akagi could only be waiting for a Xia at that point. But no, it is the transparent Xia. Meaning that, in terms of base strategy, the threat of a Kokushi Musou is still very much alive.

But... Washizu sees through it. He directly tells Akagi that he will not fall for his trap, knowing full well exactly what he's doing. If he follows through with this statement and plays the Xia without fear of dealing in, it would be devastating for Akagi. He would still have a way out, of course, through completing Yasuoka's hand before Washizu can get the Haku, but that would be it. Suzuki would of course not win when Washizu has such a monstrous tenpai, and because Akagi's called riichi he can't do anything with his hand. If Washizu draws it, he's dead. If Akagi draws it, he's dead. If the round comes to a draw, he's dead. Truly a horrifying state to be in.

    1. I realize we're slow, but you have to bear in mind that our Akagi cleaner is still a novice and is trying to meet our expectations of quality, and a lot of us are still in their first years of college. I'm pushing to get our releases up to a faster pace again, but I can't help it that our team members have lives outside of scanlation. I understand your frustration, I was talking like that a few years ago before I started this group, and I promise you this slowdown is a temporary state.

    1. It's a scene from Dante's Inferno, there's one at the end of every volume of Akagi.

  8. Maybe Akagi can use THE TECHNIQUE OF SUPREME SILENCE to switch towards a real Kokushi. Even that would require tremendous luck though.
