Akagi Chapter 166

It's been a little while, but we have for you the next chapter of Akagi, wherein Washizu draws dangerously close to completing his Kokushi Musou...!

Thanks to Doc for his cleans and to Kazuhiko for his typesetting, even though this chapter was so difficult to do that it made him want to bludgeon Yoshioka with a cane. Mahjong Day is this Saturday at 22:00 GMT, as per usual. Don't forget daylight savings!

"What can one man do against a stronghold like that?! Huh?!"

Remember when I said the manga was going to slow down considerably starting in volume 19? Well, feast your eyes on the madman behind the slowness: Yoshioka, Washizu's right hand man. Seriously, we get it, Yoshioka. Washizu-Sama is a genius who prepared for every little detail. No need to flash back to what happened a few volumes ago, we all remember. Just get on with it, already!

Well, that said, it doesn't really slow down the chapter all that much; we get to Washizu's draw rather than the whole chapter being taken up by metaphors and analysis of what happened, like what sometimes happens in Kaiji. So really, if you read this manga in chunks like I know a lot of you do, it shouldn't be too agonizing to have half the chapter taken up by Yoshioka's talking. But boy, is it not a rare theme.

All that really happened in this chapter was that Washizu mocked Akagi a little in his head, made a useless draw, and then got to Tenpai for Kokushi Musou. This is truly a sign of his superior flow; especially having him get to tenpai on just the 5th turn. It seems that Washizu truly has completed his hand already; he's drawing everything that he needs quickly, his winning tile should be among the next few tiles. And meanwhile, Akagi has absolutely nothing. If he'd gone for some hand other than Kokushi in the beginning, he might be able to complete a hand, but now, he just has to hope Washizu doesn't draw his winning tile! Can he do anything to improve his chances?!

  3. Thanks! I can only imagine Akagi or Yasuoka managae to draw all the Haku rendering Washizu's hand useless. I don't think we have even seen Yasuoka's hand so far. He might be able to deflect Washizu's Kokushi with a quick win.

  4. Holy shit I'd be almost worried for Akagi considering the situation. Thanks for the chapter

  5. I bet Washizu wins this round too and Akagi is stuck having to win via direct hits.

    1. Hopefully at the end of the month when everyone sees their share of the money in their bank accounts, it'll be a motivator to get things done. ;)
