Akagi Chapter 70

Boom! Another day, another Akagi! At this rate, we'll be back to volume 19 in no time. In this chapter, we begin the first Hanchan of Akagi vs. Washizu!

Thanks to Doc for cleaning this chapter, and to Kazuhiko for typesetting it. Mahjong Day will be this Saturday at 22:00 GMT, 2:00 PM PST, on the IRC.

"If you keep playing like that, you'll be dead in no time!"

NEW CONTENT:
  • Ohgi reiterates that Akagi can die from just dealing into Washizu's hands, or his Tsumos.
  • Ohgi initially considers that, in terms of probability, the 1-4 Man wait is probably not what Washizu has.
All right, at last, the first hanchan of Washizu Mahjong is upon us! Not much is changed in the Anime from here on in, just a few stray lines here and there... as well it should be. This chapter served to emphasize an important aspect of Akagi's strategy: Defense. You would think that he could allow for a few direct hits here and there and still stay alive, but in reality, that is not the case. In order to survive, Akagi cannot deal into a single hand of Washizu's for several reasons, most glaringly the fact that Mangan or higher hands would drain over half of his blood in a single blow. Even if he deals into just enough hands to keep him alive and then starts getting defensive, a single Tsumo from Washizu would end it immediately.

The second reason is that Direct Hits are a travesty in any Sashi-Uma (One-on-One Bet) like this one. Tsumos are one thing, but Direct Hits change the difference in points between you and your opponent by double the amount the hand is worth. So if Akagi dealt into a Mangan, not only would he lose 800 ccs of blood, he would also lose 16000 points of ground against Washizu, meaning that he would have to get a Mangan direct hit off Washizu or a Baiman from Yasuoka. Mangans do not come easily, so if it happened that Washizu ran away with his lead, that 16000-points difference would spell disaster.

So he cannot deal in. If he senses any danger, he has to ward it off. And if he can ever prevent Washizu from Tsumo-ing, he must do so immediately. That is what this Tenfold wager means. Or so Ohgi thinks...

  2. That was fast. I think it would be great to power through to volume 11 so new people can read Akagi from the beginning till the newest volume, though I also wanted to read the new Akagi chapters badly. Whatever you guys decide!

  3. Yeah, I agree... You should finish up on vol 10 and do 11 just to be done with it for good. Only to continue on to the good stuff without having to think about whining people talking about spoilers from the later chapters.

Also, the bot check thing is back... What happened?

  4. I don't get it - why are you releasing chapter 70 as the only place on the web I can find it? I found that 70 - 81 and 85 - 90 are missing on all sites I visited, but chapters 100+ are fine..? Are you guys filling in the gaps? Thanks anyway!

    1. We aren't, you can read it on a number of other sites as well like Batoto and probably Mangafox by now.

If you're asking why we're releasing volume 8 but haven't released volume 9 or 10, it's because the Anime already covers those chapters, so the demand for volumes that come after the Anime is higher. I started translating volumes 5-7 for practice so I could use the anime as a guide, but we're trying to catch up to the japanese releases of the manga that come after the Anime ends first before going back to finish 9 and 10. We did 8 because we got a new cleaner who needed some practice, and the earlier volumes tend to be easier to clean. So I'd suggest you watch the Anime starting with Episode 15 to continue the story, as we won't be going back to fill in the gaps until we've caught up to the Japanese releases of Akagi.

    2. Hey Sonickrazy,
Are new Akagi chapters being published in any Japanese monthly magazine, if yes, where could I find RAWs? Same question about Kaiji Kazuyahen.

    3. Kaiji is on hiatus in Japan as I recall, but yes, Akagi is still being published at the same rate it always has been, two chapters every two months. If you're caught up to the Volume releases, though, I'm afraid there's nowhere you can look online to continue the story; raws for the magazine releases simply do not exist on the internet beyond very small scans of amusing parts that people wanted to share. So unless you'd like to subscribe to Kindai Mahjong and import the last 10 or so issues, you'll probably have to wait until Volume 27 is released to read it.

    5. I see. Thanks for replying.

I think I'll start using a nick now since I've been around here from back when you posted your Nanto Kanare cover, and I do post frequently anonymously.

      Peace.
