DKaiji Chapters 110 & 111 & 112 & 113

A Quadruple release this soon after a double release?! Well, good sirs, we work fast and we work hard when we are able to, and this is the result. Enjoy the first FOUR chapters to the new and fresh 12th volume of Tobaku Datenroku Kaiji!!

Thanks to all those who made this gift to all of us possible in the first place. Js06 for the translating, Biggums for the cleaning, Kazuhiko for typesetting along with me, and Sonickrazy for proofreading.

Meet Mr. Butterfingers.

And they're off to the races!! Just look at them go. Kaiji seems pretty tense, but that ain't nothing to what Muraoka's going through. After Kaiji reminds Muraoka that the Dora Indicator has yet to be flipped over, it goes downhill for Muraoka pretty quick. His nervousness is clearly seen in the careful manner in which he fumbles with flipping a tile and how he knocks over and derps hard with the selection of tiles he has to work with. But once he finally gets the tiles up, what do we learn? Suu Ankou. He has Suu Ankou. Muraoka has the potential to put together a YAKUMAN HAND on the match. That's four times the wager if he wins you know. Finding out what 160 million times four is too much for my mind to handle and way beyond my pay grade anyways.

Oh and Kaiji can also get to Tenpai. Riichi and Honitsu. Meh.

When I was a young Muraoka...When I was a young Muroakaaaaa~~~!

Awesome, we get some nice mMhjong action in this one, with Muraoka considering the advantages and disadvantages of the Suu Ankou he now has access too. Long story short, it's not a great idea. As the metaphor that Fukumoto kindly gave us says, a Yakuman at this point is a double-edged sword. Yes, it's an amazing hand, and yes, winning with it will reap four times the reward...but the risk is too great. A single wait for the Suu Ankou could be deadly, so I suppose we the readers should be relieved about this. But it's actually worse for Kaiji that Muraoka didn't pursue the Yakuman hand. After a bit of speculation of different hands by our host Maeda, we come to see Muraoka's final decision for his Tenpai. A 5-8 pin and 3-sou wait!!

Now what does Kaiji have to offer, hm?

In this chapter, Maeda gets ragged on and Muraoka displays his natural narcissism.

So tell me Muraoka, why is your Tenpai so strong? Well apparently the 5-sided pinzu Hon Itsu wait that Muraoka could of had is a bad idea because it would lead to a very peculiar set of discards that would scream "PINZU WAIT" to anyone who knew a lick of Mahjong. Fair enough. As I'm sure many had the same train of thought that Maeda did about the best hand Muraoka could make. And so now that Muraoka's Tenpai is settled, we look over to Kaiji. Unfortunately for our curiosity, all we get is an scene of Kaiji looking at his hand. Grimly looking, of course.

And so the Tenpai-creation period is over. Is it time for the match to begin?

Girl look at that body.

Oh yes the match is on. And right off the bat it's already looking bad for Kaiji. Who would of guessed it? It seems Muraoka is more skilled at Minefield Mahjong than previously imagined. His decision to abandon the Suu Ankou could of had is paying off big this time. What do you do if you have four honor tiles available in your discard choices? Well, you discard of of course! Sequences can't be made up of honor tiles, only sets. And if you have all four of the tiles, then you've got yourself a pretty guaranteed set of safe tiles. And not only do the four safe tiles give you safety, they give your opponent no clues to go on.

Another one of Fukumoto's metaphors has the situation summed up pretty perfectly. This time it features Muraoka and Kaiji as sumo wrestlers. Though my desire for seeing Muraoka's ass was never high (or existent) to begin with, that image up there is simply magnificent. "Defense is the best offence!" Fukumoto just loves to screw around with commonly accepted idioms and advice doesn't he? It certainly seems to be true so far in this battle, at least.

And so Kaiji's been pushed to the edge, so to speak, and it's only turn three...

  3. Thank you. I wonder if they'll get to last step with this game and what kind of trickery are they going to employ on each other.

  4. I don't think I would want to see a gamble in which Kaiji does sumo wrestling.

  6. Thanks again guys. You guys are generous as well as meticulous. I love how you carefully censored the cover page to hide all spoilers.

Plus you really go the extra mile at the end of EVERY chapter with the mahjong reference page. What's Fanpai again? Just a quick glance at the last page and everything is crystal clear for me.

Translation, editing, cleaning, typesetting, EVERYTHING about your release screams "We love Kaiji as much as our readers do."

  8. Oh ho, it's possible to find out what Kaiji's hand is from what we've seen. Quite a choice. I wonder if that has something to do with his shortcut in chapter 82.

  12. Thanks for the chapters and for censoring the spoilers (you could have censored Muraoka's ass too but oh well...)

As one anon mentioned, it's possible to guess what Kaiji's wait is like, and it seems... unreasonable; maybe he knows that Muraoka has 2 Xias in his discards but still... Or maybe i'm guessing wrong, i need more!
