DKaiji Chapters 118 & 119 & 120 & 121

With another QUADRUPLE RELEASE we have finished Volume 12!! That means there's only one volume left for DKaiji! The end is getting nearer and it only gets crazier from here!

Who must we thank for such a gift? Well you can start with Js06 first, for his translations are what start off the process. The we move to Biggums, who beautifies the raws for you folks. Then we have Kazuhiko and I, who move the text to the cleans so you guys ca have an amazing script on an amazing page, And finally we go to Sonickrazy, who proofreads and check for errors before releasing it to the masses, namely, you guys.

Fukumoto-drawn Samurai battle. I'm done.

So Kaiji is protesting after seeing the disorderly way the tiles are laid out on the table. Anyone and everyone would know that Muraoka cheated, but of course, as much I hate to say it, Muraoka is still right in the end. Suspicions are not enough. I could easily believe that Muraoka would be clumsy enough to knee the table, and then be considerate enough to block the door so he could pick up the tiles and lay them back into shape.   Seems legit. As Fukumoto describes it, Kaiji let his guard down, and now Muraoka's troops are storming in. His troops are mowing down Kaiji's men, and frankly, things are not looking good for our friend Kaiji.

And of course it gets worse.

Apparently Miyoshi and Maeda are so ugly you can't even see the wounds they got from Kaiji.

Ah, how I love the metaphors in Kaiji. This time we get a short one that's soccer-themed (football for the non-US). In the chaos of a heated match, it's true that everyone would be desperate to score a goal (or prevent a goal), but once the ball is in the goal, no matter how it gets in, it's in. Any protests from the defendants are just "the complaining of a sore loser". And unfortunately in this context, Kaiji is the loser. Miyoshi and Maeda are only too happy to know that their use as cannon fodder worked out. But Maeda is still derping it up, with his mouth-agape looking at Muraoka's men suspiciously entering the back room. Muraoka wants none of that, but before he can say something, Kaiji discards a tile!! I almost forgot they were playing Mahjong for a second. The Chun is dealt! And Muraoka, though surprised, hits back with an even worse tile, another Nan! The fourth and final Nan!

And of course, Kaiji still has no clues to go on.

Looks like Muraoka wants his turn too.

So there's a one in six chance that the tile Kaiji deals will lead to his defeat, and therefore, his death. Now while one in six doesn't seem to bad, would you roll a die with your life on a line? Luckily, Kaiji at least gets some breathing room, when Muraoka is called into the back room. His wife called. Ok. Yeah, ok. As if any woman would marry the greasy slime of man that is Muraoka. He claims that he has to get the call or she would think he was cheating. Haha, I see what you did there. Muraoka. Cheating? Muraoka? No way. Maeda and Miyoshi are called back as well to meet his significant other. His right fist apparently. That's right I just called Muraoka's wife his right hand. Well his left leg too, but that's just too kinky for me to talk about. But other than the strangely long tirade on how marriage is a stupid idea (is your relationship ok there, Fukumoto?), he reveals that he has a master plan! I've heard that one before.

But I didn't hear about this. In fact I never expected this at all! And other than a few savvy readers, I'm sure most of you are the same. What is this master plan of his? Well you remember how Muraoka didn't have the time to count all the tiles? Well he doesn't have to. In the modern age of Kaiji, digital camera are all the rage. And Muraoka, with his chic sense of style, obviously has one. And now that every tile is revealed, it is easy to decipher Kaiji's Tenpai.

A four-sided Fanpai and Honitsu wait on 1-4-5-7 Sou!

A face only a mother Hyoudou could love.

Meanwhile back in the room, Kazuya and Kaiji have a nice heart-to-heart. Kazuya is simply saying the obvious, but Kaiji sure doesn't want to hear it. He's usually pretty calm but this time he straight up gives Kazuya a piece of his mind, something we've all known from the get-go. That he's spoiled. That he's a papa's-boy. That's what I wanna hear, Kaiji. Real talk. But Kazuya doesn't like hearing that. He's pretty mad. And in order to get back at Kaiji, he calls up his associates at Teiai, and calls for ten men to come over. Way to show your independence, Kazuya. I hope it was worth it Kaiji. How are you going to escape from this one? How much does Kaiji know about Muraoka's plan? Does he know that he entire hand is pretty much revealed to Muraoka? Because that pretty much means death for Kaiji. There is no way Muraoka would ever deal in if he knows which tiles would lead to his defeat! So this really isn't the time to be making enemies.

Unless he know's exactly what he's doing...

  2. There seems to be no exit left for Kaiji, unless he pulled some Koizumi-like trick with the tiles while he was in the bathroom.

It will be a really long wait until the next release. D:

  3. I love how Muraoka launches into that tirade against women, and I think it says A LOT about his personality instead of Fukumoto's. Of course Muraoka is the kind of guy who wouldn't want to be tied down! (And of course he'd perceive marriage primarily in terms of being TIED DOWN, as he'd think providing for or caring for anyone to be a huge chore.) Actually the entire marriage/cheating thing is pretty clever I think.

  4. It seems that Kaiji is in a rather precarious position. The only thing that seems to be a mystery here is Kaiji's hand.

Muraoka says that Kaiji's hand is that. However, we haven't actually SEEN Kaiji's hand. I still think there are tricks to be made. The first time he went to the bathroom with those tiles, he must have done something.

"See that which cannot be seen. That is the essence of gambling."

There's something more here we aren't seeing.

  5. There will be a poll to determine the next project?

I would like to return to the Mokushiroku...

  6. Kaiji must have changed his tiles somehow in the bathroom... it should be interesting to see exactly what he did.

  9. Kaiji changing his tile in the bathroom seems the most obvious but i have a feeling Kaiji did something more impressive than that. I'm so glad there was a quad release i fricken love reading this series.
Thanks FKMTkrazy you guys are the best!

  10. Oh wow, Kaiji sure is in a bind
The only way for Kaiji to win is cheat by himself and throw back Muraoka words at himself.
I imagine kaiji switching some tiles in the walls, but then Muraoka says "Hey, you cheated, you didn't had those tiles before!" Kaiji would be like "prove it" and he, even though he does have the proof, can't do it because it would mean admitting cheating himself. That's the only way i can imagine Kaiji getting out of there

    1. That's exactly what I thought too. And I believe they can't have a draw anymore, because Kaiji won't be lent any more money after what he said, for sure.

    2. The problem is... Prez can have a shot at proving it. He just flips over all the other tiles and shows that there is a duplicate tile.

Then, Kaiji counters by saying that the tiles were provided by his opponent, and accuses Muraoka of framing him and using faulty product. I'm not familiar enough with mahjong to say the next part with confidence, but I do recall that the prez talked about the shuffler being a concern for some customers.

    3. But there are two dead walls, this means a lot of tiles that are never used in the game. He would have no way to know if Kaiji changed tiles if he hadn't looked at all of them beforehand.

That's why even if he says "Let's look at all the other tiles then", he will still be admitting to be cheating, as he would have no such suspicion if he didn't cheat.

  11. Pissing off Kazuya, really seems stupid at this point. He might not be Kaiji's ally but he is the only one that can actually made the Pres pay up.

  13. Muraoka once again proves to be a worthy opponent. This is why I love Kaiji over One Outs or Kurosagi that I dropped on first chapters - in these manga opponents were way below protagonist. It was clear one-sided victory from the beginning to the point where I stopped reading. It's not the case of Kaiji: no matter how prepared scheme is, it can and will be screwed up. And it goes through entire series.

    1. Keep reading One Outs. The claim stops holding weight when some opponents start developing plans that nearly outmaneuver Tokuchi.

    2. I'd also say keep reading Kurosagi, as it is one where the protagonist actually loses now and then...

But, I do find Kurosagi less interesting because they show so many of the foolish people being fooled.

  14. Can't wait to see what Kaiji has up his sleeve. Thanks once again for your effort guys.

To mark the occasion of only one volume of DKaiji being left, here's a pretty recent video of Fukumoto-sensei playing Mahjong (from 2012):

  15. I do wonder about FKMT sensei bitterness towards women sometimes. Suezaki's wife got outta there pretty quick when the chips were down too. Not that I blame him - been there myself...

Many thanks as always, really hope things are looking up for sonic too

  16. I couldn't help but chuckle when Muraoka said Kaiji had such great luck! Kaiji has the weirdest luck ever! No matter how great his plans are they always end up backfiring. Still, as long as Kaiji doesn't end up praying I think he'll get out of this somehow.

  17. You can see Kaiji's tiles in ch 110.
I know what. The questions are how, and will he walk into a mine before any of that matters.

  18. I'm pretty sure men from Teiai are just going to be here to fuck Kaiji over in case of him losing, and won't do anything to Kaiji after he wins. Still Kazuya took it way harder than I thought he would. Thanks for chapters!

  20. Guys thanks so much for bringing us Kaiji and the other great works. I don't understand why these are not super popular, I'm glad to see so many comments here that other people also enjoy it.

  22. I'll bet the endings gonna be that both Kaiji and Muraoka play it out until Kaiji deals his very last safe tile, and then Muraoka is stuck having to deal in.

  23. I think I know Kaiji's plan.

In chapter 82, we saw him eying some object on the desk, something that inspired him. Looking back at it now, I can see that the object was Muraoka's laptop. I think that Kaiji realized that if he established a pattern of leaving in the middle of the match, the president would eventually grow bold enough to flip over and photograph all of the tiles. It's actually a really obvious thing to do when you think about it.

When Kaiji went to the bathroom during the previous game, I think he was altering one or more of the tiles, maybe applying a simple paper label over it to make it look like another tile. It wouldn't fool anyone up close, but someone studying a hurriedly taken photograph probably couldn't see it. The alter tile or tiles would be poison to Muraoka, who would draw a totally wrong conclusion and walk into a trap.

The plan has problems for sure. It would be a disaster if the President drew one of the altered tiles, because he would surely see the alteration. It is also essential that Kaiji draw the real version of the altered tile, or the deception is meaningless and would be detected after flipping the tiles. He could control the second risk by simply not going to the bathroom during the last game if he didn't draw the right tile.

Kaiji said that his plan only had an 80% chance of success. What are the odds of the President drawing one of the fake tiles?

  24. By the way, if I had any sympathy for Miyoshi and that other dude, its gone after seeing their vindictive smiles and their fawning over our villain. Disgusting creatures, both of them.
