DKaiji Chapters 86 & 87

Whoa?! Another double release of Kaiji? Yes it is. In these chapters, we discover Kaiji's plan...or do we? I still don't know.

Give a round of applause to all the members that help put this beautiful piece of manga together for you guys! Js06 for the all-important translation, Biggums for his uncannily perfect cleans, and of course Sonickrazy for his proofreading that makes the dialogue come to life!

Best Poker Face Ever.

So Muraoka is having a ball after seeing how Kaiji didn't pull Maeda out from behind him. He thinks he has the advantage and he doesn't show any sign of hiding it. Of course, we know that Kaiji is not as dumb as he looks, and that he definitely has a plan cooked up. And this time, we get a glimpse into what it is! Kaiji has already put together a hand, and it looks pretty good. A triple wait on 1-4-7 pin! Not a bad wait, but completely useless if Maeda can see it all!

Luckily, Kaiji does have a plan! He holds a ton in his hand that if switched in without Maeda knowing, can change the entire course of the match! But the thing is, Kaiji doesn't seem to like this plan very much. In fact, it turns out to be his emergency plan! In all reality, he's looking for something greater, for something that will blow the collective socks off everyone in the room! Especially Maeda and Muraoka. He says he still needs two tiles...but which two...and how would this mysterious "Plan B" work?

Sponsored by DARE. Don't do drugs, kids.

Lots of talking this chapter, which means it's explanation time! Basically, Kaiji doesn't like his Plan A because it doesn't have much winning security. What if Muraoka doesn't have a Ton? Which is completely possible given they can't see or use all the tiles. It's only slightly better than a 3-way pinzu wait, but only because Maeda and Muraoka know about it!

And so Maeda, who believes this 3-way wait isn't bad, reports it to Muraoka, who puts together a hand waiting on the manzu tiles. He has a 3-6-9 man wait! And Kaiji has FIVE of those tiles? What does this mean? It means that in 17 steps, four tiles are left over! Which means that eventually that Kaiji will lose! If Kaiji doesn't somehow get Muraoka to deal in first for this game...it's over for him!

Still waiting on that Plan B Kaiji...

  1. Wouldn't it make more sense for Kaiji to show Maeda the ton wait, and then switch to 1-4-7?

    1. I speculate that the idea of Kaiji going for a Ton tanki when he has so many possible 3-way waits would arouse more suspicion than he wants to deal with.

  2. Well a Ton wait would be a very irresponsible wait in this situation. Having a single wait on the Ton, an honor tile you'd normally avoid discarding anyway as the wait would be hard, so waiting on the Ton would be a very dumb thing to do. Something that would basically give away that Kaiji was up to something.

As always awesome update. I really love these double releases! Do you guys have a donation button?

  3. Still burning up inside wondering what Kaiji's plan is. We all know that he isn't going to win by a bit of vulgar sleight-of-hand cheating, so the reveal in this chapter is just a tease.

Is the tile he's hiding one of the tiles he took with him to the bathroom? I'll be disappointed if that is what that was all about. It seems like the others would notice during the setup when they came one tile short. I'm guessing that his bathroom trip is completely unrelated and instead he did something crazy and totally off the hook.

  6. Kaiji, why did you have to tell us your plan D: Now we know it won't end up working!
Muraoka , dude, calm down! Seriously if Kaiji looks up he'll definitely see you signing to Maeda!

Quick question, how many chapters are left in this arc?

    1. Why it's 44 chapters exactly Kinu. Only one chapter left in volume 9 (ch. 88) ten in Vol 10, eleven in Vol 11, twelve in Vol 12 and ten in Vol 13. Adds up to a total of 44 chapters that still need to be released for DKaiji.

  8. I've wondered about this for a while, but most everything that you guys sub centers around mahjong, with the exception of Rude.

When the Mahjong arc of Kaiji is over, will you guys still be subbing Kaiji as fervently as you have been? or will it slow down?

    1. Fear not, Anonymous, I can say with a good amount of certainty that we plan on scanlating Kaiji part 4 at least as fast as we've been scanlating part 3. There will be no playing favorites just because one of them has more mahjong action.

    2. At least that is what I've always thought would happen. I'm pretty sure the rest of the group feels the same way, I hope I'm not making any false promises.

    3. I certainly have no plans to stop with part 3.
I love Kaiji as a whole, and part 4 is great.

  11. I'm worried for Kaiji. With that big catch of Muraoka's, it feels like revealing his hand stacked the odds too heavily into Muraoka's favor even with the fake wait. Hopefully Kaiji figures out that the Mans are dangerous; hell, since Kaiji has so many Man, Kaiji might already think that Muraoka built his wait around those tiles. I hope he does.
