DKaiji Chapter 61

Oh boy. You've been waiting for it folks. And man are you guys up for a treat! But first, let us take a moment and give thanks to those who allowed this treat to be given. A toast, to our glorious translator js06, to our exalted cleaner Crump Biggums, and to our revered proofreader Sonickrazy, the Messiah that hold our little group together! I also want to leave some thanks to all our readers! The "thank you"s and comments we received during the last post really motivated us! <3 <3

"See what cannot be seen! That is the heart of gambling!"

First off, a note. I intentionally did not typeset the original sign and quotation by Muraoka in order to preserve the artwork. It is a nice example of Japanese poetry, though in Sonic's words "Muraoka's handwriting is worse than ass", so don't use it as the best example.

We're back right where we just left off, with Kaiji finishing up in the bathroom. But he notices something in the mirror! What could it be? Incidentally enough, it's a message from Muraoka himself! "See that which cannot be seen! That is the heart of gambling!" The irony of the statement is not lost on Kaiji, who immediately condemns Muraoka for being, in his words, "a conman." Though at least Kaiji knows he's being fooled, by Muraoka at least. But when he returns, it'll be time to confirm Miyoshi and Maeda's true allegiances!

And so Kaiji enters the room. Muraoka, being the sleazy man he is, jumps right back towards his side after putting Kaiji's tiles back in place. He fakes deep thought with a series of "hmm"s, which of course doesn't fool Kaiji a bit. Kaiji moves back to his tiles, looks down, and sees...!! Something. Something that indicates to him that something has changed, that Muraoka did indeed look at his tiles. But what did he notice? Unfortunately, I know as little as you do on the true properties of the "Kaiji Shuffle" so I suppose that will have to be revealed later.

But more importantly, Kaiji now has a chance to see if he has been betrayed. He checks the reactions from his "collaborators", Miyoshi and Maeda. More specifically Miyoshi though. I do not know why Kaiji focuses so much on Miyoshi during these events, though I suppose it's because it's much easier to communicate with him than with Maeda, who is behind him. Muraoka fakes deep thinking (as if he could really think that deeply) and deals a tile, which of course passes. Kaiji looks up to Miyoshi for guidance once again and...gets nothing but a derpy "?" over Miyoshi's head.

Of course, there's only one logical conclusion to this. And Kaiji has no trouble discerning the unfortunate truth. He has been betrayed. Again. And this time by people he really thought he could trust! Poor, poor, Kaiji, always victim to his own trust and Fukumoto's plot enhancers. But as bad as it is for Kaiji, he can still turn this to his advantage! After all, Miyoshi and Maeda don't know they've been found out! He can use their "cheating" to his advantage in a way only our Kaiji can! And what's better than seeing Kaiji outwit everyone, including those who betray him?

  4. It must be because he has some kind of prearranged signal which would especially be true for Miyoshi who is right in front of him. That neither shows any warning signal is brutal. But either way, this is still nothing in comparison to the "Andou!" moment. Once again, Kaiji has his back to the wall but if he can survive all the steps this time around, he certainly has a chance to turn things around. (Manly and rational of Kaiji to throw away a hand like this one though. That takes guts)

    1. I agree that it's not to the depths of despair as Kaiji was near the end of Restricted Rock Paper Scissors but it's getting pretty close. Your "comrades" betraying you, with you risking basically the rest of your life to forced labor is pretty bad. But I have this feeling that it's gonna get even worse.

  7. Thanks for the many releases in the last two weeks ^__^

I wonder if it could be possible that Miyoshi and Maeda really are not betraying Kaiji. The wonderment on their faces looks kinda real. Though I can not figure out how it's possible.

    1. If they weren't betraying Kaiji I would think that they would try to signal to him SOMEHOW that Muraoka looked at his tiles. Even if they didn't have a pre-arranged signal I'm sure a look of panic would of sufficed.

Of course, this is my only speculation and it's completely plausible that Miyoshi and Maeda are simply traitors after all.
